Tragic Air Show Crash

Last Sunday, a pilot crashed during an Air Show at Travis Air Force Base in California. The 77-year-old pilot crashed while upside-down a distance away from the spectating crowd. Unfortunately the pilot, Eddie Andreini, died after flying ever since he was sixteen years old.

You never know the importance of rehearsal until a drastic consequence presents itself to you. Although our Shakespeare play isn't as severe as the military plane crash, it still portrays the same message. It teaches us to practice and rehearse or something may go wrong.

I feel that this is a tragic loss to us and the family, but feel a source of anger when I see the picture on the CNN website; some of the bystanders act as if nothing has happened while the crash site is off in the distance burning fresh and new. Under no circumstances am I assuming that they aren't affected. I just feel as if they weren't by the way they are standing and looking about.

The author, Dana Ford, most likely feels sorrow and remorse toward the event in itself. She restated that, "No one wanted to see an event like this and certainly...our hearts go out to the Andreini family and crew" (Pilot...Crash). Although this was not confirmation of her own feelings, it could represent a possibility. Ford also stated that "the crash happened away from spectators" as if she wanted to reassure people that nothing gruesome was within close proximity to bystanders of the show (Pilot...Crash).

Fatigued Operator Derails a Train

Around 2:30 in the morning, an operator supposedly fell asleep causing the train to continue past its stopping point. Once the train made contact with the concrete, it continued on and rode up a nearby escalator. Around thirty people were injured during the crash. This event triggered a chain a policy changes and working restrictions for O'Hare International Airport.

In school, most of the time students get scolded if they sleep while doing work for a teacher. I see now why it is important to not sleep while working, disregarding the fact that they are completely different scenarios. The message still carries with enormous weight and influence.

This event make me feel uneasy about people in control over another's life. People like this who have no reason to be fatigued within the past day or two can be so irresponsible with their duties that they risk the dozens of souls on board. Since the worker's schedule failed to report any reason of drowsiness or exhaustion, then she should not have been unconscious during the time.

How does the author support his/her claim?
The authors support their claim by prompting each separate subject with paraphrased responses from employees of O'Hare International Airport. They reiterated, "The O'Hare incident prompted us to take a closer look at our scheduling" (Operator...Fired). This statement informed those questioning the situation that the company is changing procedures in order to prioritize safety. Although their schedules proved not to be the cause of the operator's fatigue, O'Hare promoted this statement by saying, "Nothing about the operator's work schedule suggests that fatigue should have played a factor in her performance" (Operator...Fired).

18 People Missing Due To Landslide

Around 10:45 on Saturday morning, reports of landslides start streaming in. Everything took place in rural Washington when the saturated groundwater, combined with heavy rainfall, gave way. Due to the landslide, eighteen people were then unaccounted for as rescuers struggled their way through dangerous conditions to check for survivors.

Throughout the years of your youth, you are repeatedly told to "be safe." Even during school, you learn of the troubles that will occur in life or disastrous situations. Natural disasters are one of many things that exemplify these dangers. Landslides are a type of disaster that can occur at any time without any warning.

I feel terrible about everything the people are having to go through while waiting to be safe in their homes. The fire chief of the district says that it is too dangerous to proceed to rescue those stranded in the quicksand-like mud at the moment. I believe they need help as soon as possible considering that the mud is up to the people's armpits.

Ashley Fantz uses quotations in order to give recognition to what someone else said on the topic at hand. She uses a countless amount of quotes that the fire chief said about the landslide. She said, "Every human endeavor ...is being explored here to rescue and find their loved ones" (Fantz). The use of this quote was to help reassure everyone watching the traumatizing situation that all actions are being used to save the people at any cost.

Fantz also mentioned, "We are working on establishing shelters for those who have nowhere to go" (Washington Landslide...). The purpose of this statement was to support the previous quote to suppress any growing concerns. It was used to clear up any questions about evacuation details.

Boston University Coach Accused of Bullying?

Boston University coach, Kelly Greenberg, was accused of bullying from four players on the BU team. Greenberg received similar accusations years before but were overlooked because it caused her to realize how difficult her teaching style was. Currently, two of the four girls have withdrawn from the school and one has reported having suicidal thoughts due to inappropriate and demoralizing comments. She stated that her actions "demolished" her by the time she left.

In every class our school population has attended, we have repeatedly been lectured on the serious attitude the faculty and staff has toward our success and well-being. Although we lack sports and extra-curricular activities, that doesn't mean we don't know how severe such treatments are against students and friends. Everybody attending our school can say they have been taught proper manners and correct behaviors.

This story angers me that a professional university coach can treat players with such behavior; to push someone to their limits resulting in serious suicidal thoughts. Even to mention that reports have been received years in advance due to similar accusations and nothing is being done about the matter. Greenberg is nearing her coaching contract and gradually losing supporters because its reaching its end time.

How does the author use language to advance his/her point of view?
Conway's use of language is used in a manner that supports his initial intentions on reporting on the topic. His perspective seems to be siding with the evidence as it crumbles all around Coach Greenberg. He states, "Even as the longstanding evidence against Greenberg mounts, she still has her supporters" (Conway). The more this sentence is reread, it sounds as if he the sentence structure slightly confirms his stance on the subject. He also mentions, "If the university review again finds validity in these allegations though, it will just be all the more reason to start anew" (Conway). These two statements reiterate his position and reinforce the supporters who believe she is guilty of bullying.

Obama Introduces "My Brother's Keeper"

President Obama recently unveiled a new initiative in response to troubled children or teenagers with life issues. He addressed it this in order to restore their hope and give help to those who need it. Obama's used his own life experiences as an example to describe the life these people may be living right now.

The President is connected to me through my history class. His accomplishments or actions he carried out during his terms become a topic of conversation; this often results in factious debates or prolonged class discussions. Controversy is common among ambivalent students that often don't understand what we're talking about.

I feel like this initiative seems a little racist and one sided. President Obama only targets African Americans without the thought of other ethnicity in peril. He explains his reasoning by using his past childhood experiences to spotlight blacks instead of all races.

Flappy Bird Has Flown The Coop

Over the course of last weekend, the developer of the most downloaded game, Flappy Bird, posted several tweets issuing the games removal from the Android and iPhone app store. The game allows players to direct a bird through pipes as obstacles. It was officially released in May of 2013 but wasn't recognized as a top download until mid-January of 2014. Catherine Shoichet informs us that the developer of the game said, "I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore" (Shoichet).

The connection between our classes and this game is caused by the students themselves. Over the past month since the game's popularity spike, students in all grades have become massively addicted to it. This has increased our intolerance for schoolwork and affected our patience to play the game. It also presents a viable distraction from learning.

I'm a little taken back from the developer's recent action because it has provided everyone with a sense of enjoyment and presented us with a struggling challenge. I believe that he has his reasons for this recall but possibly did not think about its effects on everyone else.

The purpose for the author's use of quotations deals with direct information and the issue of copyright. Shoichet says, "'I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore'" (Shoichet). This quote mentioned in her article provided direct words from the mouth of the creator for correct and reliable information to the readers of the article. She also said, "'It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore'" (Shoichet). This quote in itself reassures us that lingering theories relating to legal accusations are incorrect and false information.

Money Down The Drain

A 42 year old poker player by the name of Christian Lusardi was arrest after finding that he flushed more than $2.7 million in counterfeit poker chips down the toilet.

The discover was made after the chips clogged up sewer pipes in the Borgata Casino and Spa. The crime occured during the "Winter Poker Open's 'Big Stack, No Limit Hold 'Em' event at the hotel" (Draznin, Haley).

He is currently charged with rigging a public event, theft by deception, and criminal attempt. His bail was placed at $300,00 at the Atlantic City jail.

In just about every class while we are in school, we are told to grow up to be the best that we can be; to use the knowledge we acquire to earn a good living in life. Obviously Lusardi didn't live up to these expectations. He chose stupid acts of crime to proceed in life which landed him in jail with a $300,000 bail.

I don't understand why people go so far as to counterfeit money(in this case poker chips) to gain money when nine times out of ten, they get caught. I am against his actions but wonder why he thought flushing that large amount of chips wouldn't get him caught. It makes me angry that people try and succeed at acts of crime than go through less trouble to actually do something right.

The author's point of view remains a neutral to retain an informative and non-biased article. Draznin maintains neutral in her perspective in sentences like this, "The poker tournament began in mid-January with more than 4,800 people enrolled. When it was cancelled Friday, 27 people remained in the tournament." She refrains from using personal experience and connections to anything in order to keep it more professional.
